Class Project: Components of a Watershed
Students divided into study groups to conduct experiments on soil, water, animals/insects, and plants in the Kohala watershed. The plant team looked at the number of plants growing on nurse logs, versus the forest floor; the soil team tested soil to see if the soil at higher elevations had more nutrients than lower elevations; the water team tested where the bog or high stream had more nutrients; and the animal team tested whether there was a higher diversity of animals in the bog.
