The National Association of Conservation Districts is holding its 2010 Southwest and Pacific Regions' annual conference on the Island of Hawai‘i. This conference will give conservation district members from twelve states and the Pacific Island Territories an opportunity to learn more about agriculture in the State of Hawai‘i. You will learn about Hawaiian agricultural and resource management systems, and they will be compared to Western agricultural practices here on Hawai‘i Island.
Prior to WWII the Territory of Hawai‘i was food independent, providing 90% of its own food to its residents. Today, that figure is 10%. Hawai‘i Island, because of its size, its variety of climates (we have 11 of 13 climate zones) and range of rainfall, can grow a diverse list of crops. Indeed, the island is considered the "Breadbasket of Hawai‘i."
We hope you can join us for what promises to be an informative and educational conference.
