In the Summer of 2010, School Garden and Class Teachers from five of the Hawaiian Islands gathered at the Mala‘ai Culinary Garden of the Waimea Middle School for a Summer Conference entitled, Smart by Nature: Growing a School Garden Curriculum K-12. The staff from the Center for Ecoliteracy CEL in Berkeley California (www.ecoliteracy.org) partnered with the Hawai‘i Island School Garden Network to interweave their school garden curriculum Big Ideas and their school sustainability work Smart By Nature into a practical hands-on seminar that would form a firm foundation for development of a curriculum that is relevant both today and tomorrow.

Presenters from CEL included Executive Director Zenobia Barlow, Director of Education Carolie Sly, and Creative Director Karen Brown. They were joined by School Garden leaders from O‘ahu and Hawai‘i Island. I hope you will enjoy the presentations and travel along with us as we explore the world of Food/Culture/Health/Environment in the School Garden.
