Abstract:
Dr. Meyer will focus on Indigenous sensibilities and their role in accurately describing the issues of sustainability. The rigor of specificity within place is vital to this discussion and will lead, ultimately to universal principles. But first, she will begin with Hawaiian fundamental ideas found in the difference between mana‘o‘i‘o (knowing through experience), mana‘olana (knowledge through thinking), and aloha (liberation through action). Manu’s work in Indigenous epistemology or philosophy of knowledge has now entered the research, science and sustainability fields.
