Intersections of Knowledge Systems: Coral as an Example
Makani Gregg (UHH Marine Science major), Lucas Mead (UHH Tropical Conservation Biology and Environmental Sciences Master’s student), Dr. Misaki Takabayashi (UHH Marine Science Assistant Professor)
Abstract:
In Hawaiʻi, corals provide the foundation of reefs that are a treasure trove of resources and biodiversity in the ocean. Corals also represent the first ancestor that appears in the Hawaiian genealogy chant, the Kumulipo. The presentation will highlight the intersections of knowledge on corals understood by Hawaiians and geneticists, all emphasizing the kinship between corals and humans. |
