“‘Ma ka hana ka ‘ike,’ by doing we learn. It’s in all cultures,” said Program Director Nancy Redfeather at the 6th Annual Hawaii Island School Garden Network Summer Symposium, June 7-8, at Hawaii Preparatory Academy. “It’s inspiring to work with teachers. To watch the growth this year has been amazing,” said Redfeather. “I started teaching in 1969, and this has been the best ever for me.”

According to Jim Cain, program director for The Kohala Center’s beginning farmer training program, growing food requires just three basic things: land, water, and people. “Our island has plenty of land and water, but we are in need of more people who want to make a living as farmers,” he said.

A local not-for-profit center is connecting West Hawaii communities interested in conservation and management of their fishery with easy-to-use tools that allow greater stewardship of fish populations. The Kohala Center developed a voluntary spawning guide, a colorful poster rich with pictures and information teaching users to fish more responsibly, to help preserve Hawaii’s vibrant and precious marine resources.

Exercise your hope in the future of our island planet by becoming a Friend of The Kohala Center.
Here's what one of our Friends says about The Kohala Center's Circle of Friends:
"For me, it's about community, about empowerment. I enjoy being part of a community that has the enormous potential to empower individuals—locally and globally—in ways that are tangible and that help to shape our island and our earth. Being a Friend is also about inspiration, about having passion for solutions to environmental and social problems that can, for me, sometimes feel too overwhelming. Sure, I do my part—I compost and recycle. But, in my affiliation with The Kohala Center, when I compost and recycle, I also know that I’m part of a larger vision. That’s hope, too."
Friendship means the fun of learning about our island world. And it means you will be supporting work that is both compelling and critically important to our future.
