On Dec 1, 2011, several students and their teachers from Honokaa HS Forestry and Ag classes spent the day on a field trip to Laupahoehoe Forest Natural Area Reserve. Students got to see and experience the forest and received information from the experts from the field.

Overcast skies greeted over three hundred 5th grade female students at the annual Girls Exploring Mathematics and Science (GEMS) event at the Outrigger Keauhou Resort on Thursday, November 17th. versed in coral reef ecology earlier during the week, and arrived as certified ReefTeachers to volunteer their Saturday in order to educate visitors on proper reef etiquette.

This select national leadership program integrates the development of leadership skills with outstanding opportunities for high school students to study the biology, ecology, and cultural traditions of the Island of Hawai‘i.

Program activities include meeting with cultural practitioners to learn about the culture and history of the island, participating in the restoration of native forests, exploring the geological wonders of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, kayaking, camping near the ocean, and learning about coral reef ecology and management. In addition to providing incredible adventures and experiences, the program gives students a chance to identify and develop their group building and leadership skills.

Focus of Study:

  • Living history and culture of Hawai‘i
  • Natural and geological history of the islands
  • Human impact on the islands
  • Leadership skills for sustainable communities
Learning Activities:
  • Visit Volcanoes National Park
  • Hike across a dormant volcanic crater
  • Explore a tropical forest
  • Snorkel and kayak to explore marine biology and coral reef ecology
  • Meet kūpuna (elders) and explore the history and culture of Hawai‘i
