The Honaunau School garden, run by Melissa Chivers and Jessica Sobocinski, is more than just a place where flowers and vegetables grow; it is a living classroom where students and teachers can observe, interact with, and learn about the natural world that is responsible for supporting human existence on this planet.

Almost two years since it was completed, The Kohala Center’s Health Impact Assessment on Hawaii County’s Agriculture Plan has garnered national attention and helped produce meaningful effects on the local food system.

We have begun to see our early efforts in research and education mature:

  • In the fall of 2007, a new Hawai‘i County Energy Sustainability Plan was completed.
  • The Energy Plan will be complemented by work on food and water systems.
  • A unified GIS Infrastructure is being built to integrate Western scientific and Hawaiian scientific and cultural data. An important part of the GIS Infrastructure is a decision support and knowledge management system that will make data available to science, education, and even policy initiatives that relate to natural resource management issues.
  • To ensure that strong intellectual leadership moves us forward into the future, the Mellon-Hawai‘i Doctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowship Program was established.
  • To ensure that island youth can assume positions in a knowledge based economy, a new science program is being installed for the entire Kohala Elementary School.
