Operation Exploration
Projects Included: Searchin’ for Sea Urchins: How Does PH/Nitrites/and Nitrates affect sea urchin diversity along a 20-foot line?
The 8th grade Science and English curriculum were integrated into a variety of projects related to the environment. Science classes focused on the scientific inquiry process, while English classes focused on non-fiction reading strategies, note taking, and technical writing skills related to the students’ environmental projects. Twenty-five individual research projects were conducted: some of these projects included studies of the percentage of marine trash that is non-biodegradable; the effects of turbidity on marine life; bacteria levels in different depths of water; how humans affect nitrate levels in sea water; the effects of temperature on pH levels; and how pH, nitrates, and phosphates in water affect urchin diversity.
