Gardens are flourishing everywhere!
The Hawai‘i Island School Garden Network now supports 69 school and community gardens on Hawai‘i Island alone.
Students are producing their own food and developing a taste for healthy, fresh, locally grown fruits, vegetables, herbs, edible flowers, and more. They're having fun while they’re at it—with classmates, teachers, family, friends, and neighbors. Across Hawai‘i Island, nearly 700,000 square feet have been planted thus far, annually yielding 15 tons of food for these students and their school communities to enjoy!
Young people, their schools, and their families are learning about health and nutrition, about how to nurture and keep island soils healthy, about how our ma uka or “uphill” work protects our oceans. And about how to stay continuously involved in all that we can do—as individuals and as a group—to care for the island and our communities.
A lot of wonderfully engaged learning of mathematics, social studies, language arts, fine arts, and the natural sciences is taking place—in fun, outdoor settings. In cool, breezy Waimea. In tropical Hilo. In sunny South Kona. In green, green, green Kohala. Everywhere.
Come and join us! We are seeking additional volunteers and would greatly appreciate your assistance. Help us also to keep and continue all of the learning and all of the healthy ways of living that the gardens inspire, with your monetary donation.
