Chocolate Growing and Candy Processing on Kuaiwi Farm
Saturday, February 13, 2010
9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Visit Kuaiwi Farm with Una Greenaway and Leon Rosner. Kuaiwi Farm is an historic farm located in the ahupua‘a of Kealakekua (pathway of the gods), and a wonderful example of an intact piece of the pre-contact Kona field system. The kuaiwi are low rock mounds, which separate the kīhāpai, or growing fields.
Kuaiwi Farm has been using organic practices for 32 years, with organic certification for 10 years. One-hundred-year-old coffee trees coexist alongside macadamia nut trees, chocolate trees, banana trees, avocado trees, citrus trees, pineapple, vegetables, herbs, flowers, native plantings and more, on this well-tended 5-acre organic paradise. Most of the crops are processed on the farm, including the making of chocolate candy.
Come and take part in an authentic, off-the-beaten-path experience to learn about the growing of all of these plants, and the steps in making chocolate candy—from the tree to the final product. Participate in some of these steps, especially the all-important tasting.
Come with your taste buds prepared for some food fun!
