Beekeeping and Volcano Island Honey with Richard Spiegel
Saturday, March 20, 2010
10 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Volcano Island Honey Company (VIHC) is a small family-owned and operated honey business that has been producing Rare Hawaiian Organic White Honey from a single kiawe forest on Hawai‘i Island for 27 years. Richard Spiegel started the business as a hobby in 1975; until 1981, the honey was given away to family and friends. VIHC’s artisan, gourmet honeys are now nationally and internationally sought after.
Come and learn how VIHC applies the principles of quality, integrity, social sensitivity, and environmental responsibility to its business practices—what is now referred to as a “triple bottom line business.” Discover how VIHC exemplifies value-added, sustainable, and diversified organic agriculture, and is committed to continuous improvement in its beekeeping techniques using nonviolent and non-toxic methods to harvest honey.
Richard Spiegel will draw on his experience as a lawyer, mediator, facilitator, and beekeeper to discuss values and ethics in business, social and environmental responsibility, and practical information about sustainable agriculture, honeybees, beekeeping, and honey production. In addition, learn about the roots of the current worldwide decline of bees and the implications for humans and the food chain.
