Visit Honopua Farm and lunch with owners Ken and Roen Hufford. Ken and Roen will share a favorite recipe with you.

Honopua Farm in Waimea was founded over thirty years ago by Roen's parents, Marie and Bill McDonald. The McDonalds produced flowers for commercial sale until they retired from full-time farming in the mid-1990s  Roen and husband Ken Hufford continued farm operations, growing flowers (mainly protea and lavender) then gradually expanded production to include organic vegetables, currently at the core of the farm’s business. Honopua Farm’s organic produce and flowers are available to consumers at the weekly Waimea Homestead Farmers’ Market, at local restaurants, and at wholesale and retail outlets.

Roen was born and raised in Hawai‘i, educated in New York, and earned a B.F.A. in Art from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. She is a floral designer and lei maker. Roen currently makes kapa, the native Hawaiian bark cloth. Honopua farm provides her with the raw materials to create pieces grounded in traditional concepts.

Ken was raised in Michigan and attended the University of Michigan. He earned a master’s degree in social work. Before entering farming, he was a social worker and entrepreneur. He managed several small businesses (hand-crafted furniture in Berkeley, California; a health food store and flower shop co-owned with Roen on O‘ahu). Ken has lived in Hawai‘i for almost thirty years. His interests include aviation and classic cars.
